Teaching Philosophy
I strive to be able to give every student the unique tools that they need in order to achieve their goals in music, whatever they may be. Providing access to equipment, literature, methodology, and guidance is an important aspect of learning percussion, and my ability to share my resources and experiences as best as I can with another learning musician (which we all are) is the most essential piece to my educational service.
Lesson Structure
My lessons are intended to create a framework for students to be able to make music in the way that best suits them. This means providing students with the space to explore their musical self and having creative freedom within their lessons, while also providing the guidance and resources necessary to structure long-term advancements for the future of their musical journeys. Students will have the opportunity to learn drumset, mallet keyboard instruments, snare drum, timpani, and various auxiliary percussion instruments. In addition, I am able to provide instruction on ensemble set-up and performance, chamber music, and other collaborative playing scenarios, and help students understand their role in these scenarios as well as how to treat them and be their most prepared. Finally, students seeking competitive playing opportunities will be able to access my repertoire selection, and I am able to work with students through any assigned materials for competitions and festival ensembles.
Students are expected to arrive on time to lessons and with all necessary materials as determined by myself with reasonable advance notice. Students should arrive having prepared to the best of their ability the materials assigned to them from the prior lesson. This will ensure the most efficient and most successful operation of a student’s lessons program, and will allow for enough space to prevent overlap between one student’s time and the next.
